HOMS signs collaboration agreement with international robotic surgery expert James Hamilton

Santiago, Dominican Republic, July 2023.- With the aim of strengthening private healthcare in the country and giving patients access to the latest medical and technological advances in robotic surgery, Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) has signed a cooperation agreement with Dr. James Hamilton, an international specialist in robotic, digestive and bariatric surgery.
Dr. Hamilton, who has performed more than 6,000 complex abdominal surgeries and more than 3,000 robotic digestive tract and bariatric surgeries, will serve as HOMS director of Innovation and Quality in Robotic and Metabolic Surgery, introducing new robotic procedures and broadening the hospital’s portfolio of distinctive services.
The agreement, signed by Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español, director and chairman of the Board of Directors, and Dr. James Hamilton, who is also a researcher, lecturer and global adviser on robotic technology, provides for an increase in the number of publications as a way to help improve treatments and practise evidence-based medicine, further raising the level of excellence and patient safety.
Speaking about the partnership, Dr. Sánchez Español said HOMS is where patients’ needs meet knowledge, research, innovation and experience, so together with Hamilton they aim to generate new ideas, offer training and work hand in hand with Dominican doctors to keep strengthening the quality of care, research and teaching.
“We continue to invest in innovation and knowledge transfer because we believe in continuous growth through a culture of dialogue, collaboration and strategic adaptation. That is why we are a benchmark, actively incorporating innovation and research into our clinical practice. Together with Dr. Hamilton, we will work to obtain international quality accreditations, develop specialised clinics and consolidate our position as leaders in health tourism in the northern region,” explained Dr. Sánchez Español.
The agreement states that the hospital’s innovation projects will focus on research and on building an innovation ecosystem in robotic surgery with universities and companies both in the health sector and in other sectors. It will also drive organisational and clinical management, materials and devices, as well as information and communication technologies (ICT) in health.

About Dr. James Hamilton

He is also a visiting professor in the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery section at Stanford University and at Cleveland Clinic Weston, as well as associate professor of Surgery at Universidad de los Andes and associate professor and researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
