More than 300 industry organisations, partners and operators from Latin America and the Caribbean attended the event.

Brazil. The LATAM Fibre Broadband Leaders Summit 2024, organised by Huawei and supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), was successfully held in Brazil under the theme “Digital Fibre, Advancing Giga LATAM”.

More than 300 industry organisations, partners and operators from Latin America and the Caribbean attended the event, where they discussed trends, strategies and practices in the development of fibre broadband. Huawei proposed three strategies for the broadband industry for the first time: the all-optical transition, the Gigabit transition and the scenario transition. The company also launched three digital fibre solutions.

Joey Zhou, President of ICT Solutions Sales and Marketing for Latin America at Huawei, said fibre optics has become the most important broadband access technology in Latin America. His statement is based on a recent report by consultancy Omdia, which found that in 2024 fibre accounts for more than 60% of home broadband in Latin America.

One of the conclusions of the meeting is that Latin American telecommunications operators have launched all-optical strategies and continue to increase their investment in this technology. As digital services such as remote working, live streaming or streaming and e-commerce grow rapidly in Latin America, users will pay more attention to their network experience, and upgrading bandwidth from 100 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s will open up new room for growth for operators.

At the same time, experts noted that optical broadband applications are no longer limited to traditional home entertainment scenarios but have diversified, as in the case of smart homes and SME digitalisation. Thanks to fibre optics, operators can therefore push the boundaries of home broadband revenue.

Joey Zhou also noted that “Latin America’s digital economy is in a golden period of development, and digital services are accelerating, bringing broad opportunities for value creation. Huawei is ready to work with governments, regulators, operators and industry partners to accelerate the development of Latin America’s gigabit optical broadband industry and jointly build a digital Latin America”.

Another speaker was Gary Lu, President of Huawei’s Carrier Network Solutions Marketing and Sales Department, who gave a speech entitled “ACT to Embrace the Era of Giga and Artificial Intelligence”. The A stands for ARPU, the C for service coverage and the T for take-up rate.

“ACT” means combining the three transitions to grow the user base and revenue of fibre broadband services, and also to improve the quality of digital life in Latin America. Gary Lu said fibre construction and development in Latin America has entered the fast lane and the era of Gigabit fibre broadband has arrived in the region, so operators must seize the new business opportunities of the Gigabit and Artificial Intelligence era.

In his speech, Gary Lu proposed three development strategies, the all-optical transition, the Gigabit transition and the scenario transition, to accelerate the move from copper to fibre, increase speed and quality, meet the requirements of digital and AI services, and provide diversified, scenario-based services. By accelerating the three transitions, Huawei and Latin American operators will jointly usher in a new era of Gigabit intelligence in the region, offering users richer, higher-quality digital life experiences.

Daniel Zhang, Vice President of ICT Solutions Sales and Marketing for Latin America at Huawei, gave a speech entitled “Digital fibre innovations, advancing Giga LATAM”.

Daniel Zhang said Huawei has always adhered to the vision of “In Latin America, For Latin America”, meeting the needs of the Latin American market and continuously promoting digital fibre innovations to accelerate the development of the Latin American ICT industry. To help operators make the most of Gigabit development opportunities in Latin America, Huawei launched three major digital fibre solution innovations: DQ ODN innovation, to accelerate the move from copper to fibre; the application-level FTTH experience assurance solution, which expands Gigabit business packages; and Super GPON innovation, which expands business scenarios for small and medium-sized enterprises.
