The contribution of ICT-Huawei to the academic development of young talent in the Dominican Republic

• Through its ICT Academy programme, Huawei has trained thousands of Dominican students and teachers in information technology at institutions such as ITLA, UASD and INTEC.

As part of its talent development plan in the Caribbean, Huawei, the leading technology and information company, has built an ecosystem that gives a boost to young students in the Dominican Republic. 

Through the ICT Academy programme, Huawei has trained both teachers and students in the different branches of information technology and computing. 

Since 2019, the Instituto Tecnológico de Las Américas (ITLA) has trained more than 1,200 students through this programme. In addition, the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) trained more than 300 of its students during 2024. 

Academies such as the Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (Intec), the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and the Instituto Nacional de Formación Técnico Profesional (Infotep) offer optional subjects in their course catalogue. 

Every year, Huawei organises the ICT Competition, a global event in which more than 140 countries take part and which puts the skills of ICT Academy students to the test. 

Dominicans at the 2023-2024 ICT Competition 

In 2024, three software engineering students aged 20, 21 and 22, from the Dominican Republic, took part for the first time in Shenzhen, reaching the final stage of this major contest and taking third place in the competition. 

During their stay in China, the young Dominicans had the chance to immerse themselves in educational, cultural and recreational activities, learn more about the history of China, interact with other delegations and visit Huawei’s headquarters.  

Since it began in 2015, more than 150,000 students from 90 countries and 2,000 educational institutions have taken part in the ICT Competition. This event not only assesses participants’ technical skills, it also promotes a rounded education based on learning to know, to do, to live together and to be. 

Once certified as a professional capable of providing solutions to the company, students can join Huawei’s internship programme. 

For the ICT Academies programme, the organisers have authorised various technology tracks, namely:  5G, Cloud Service, Storage, Al, loT, Datacom, Big Data, Cloud Computing, Security and Intelligent Comp.
