Senate honours the career of surgeon Rafael Sánchez Español

• The honour was awarded after the full Senate unanimously approved a resolution submitted by the president of the upper house, Eduardo Estrella.

Santo Domingo, August 2023.- The Senate of the Republic honoured Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español for his long professional career and his contributions as a doctor and pioneer of laparoscopic and robotic surgery for the benefit of the country.

The award was presented to the distinguished doctor at a special ceremony led by the President of the Senate, Eduardo Estrella, and the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña.

Eduardo Estrella, who proposed the initiative, highlighted the contributions of Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español to the development of medicine in the Dominican Republic, demonstrating ability, innovation and management skills and treating his profession as a vocation.

“Dr. Sánchez Español’s broad judgement and vision on health are invaluable attributes that have led him to break moulds and paradigms in Dominican medicine,” said Eduardo Estrella.

At the event, held in the Senate’s new, modern auditorium, Estrella said Rafael Sánchez Español has left an indelible mark on both the scientific and academic communities. “His strong commitment to research and the dissemination of knowledge has been an inspiring example for many, making him a role model for new generations of doctors,” he added.

Dr. Rafael Sánchez Español was born on 14 April 1951 in the municipality of Tenares, Hermanas Mirabal province. He was coordinator of the Surgery Residency at the José María Cabral y Báez Regional Hospital in Santiago, where he set up the Outpatient Hernia Management Clinic in 1987 and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit in 1989. 

The prestigious surgeon served as director of Clínica Corominas in Santiago and was the creator and main driving force behind Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS), where he has been chairman of the HOMS Board of Directors and general director from its founding to the present day.

Dr. Sánchez Español has received countless honours, including the “Master of Dominican Surgery” award from the Dominican College of Surgeons and recognition for Academic and Clinical Merit from the Dominican Medical College, among others.
