The development of 5G technology, its principles and benefits in today’s society

- Manufacturing, mining, ports and telemedicine have already benefited from the adoption of 5G.
When it comes to 5G, expectations have been exceeded and adoption times have been shortened, coinciding with events that have revolutionised the rise of technology.

December 2023.- As part of the Technology Week organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), a team from Huawei gave a talk and a workshop focused on Information and Communications Technology.
In the talk “5G – Principles and benefits in today’s society”, Engelbert Reyes Cabrera explained the development of 5G technology, its benefits for users, its main applications and some of the features of this new technology.

Reyes Cabrera told the young participants about the advances of 5G compared with 4G technologies. “Today, if we compare how long it has taken to adopt this technology with what happened with 4G, we see that expectations have been exceeded and adoption times have been shortened. When we study the possible reasons for this progress, we find it coincides with events that have revolutionised the rise of technology, such as COVID-19, which led to much greater use of it.”
Some of the current uses of this technology were also presented, which helped the audience better understand its scope and advantages.
Industries that have already benefited from 5G adoption include manufacturing, through the use of AGVs (Autonomous Guided Vehicles); and, as a second example, mining, with self-driving trucks that deliver high performance.
He also mentioned ports, where 5G has been used to operate cranes automatically – there are still operators, but it makes the work more efficient; and the fourth industry, telemedicine, where thanks to 5G there is equipment (for example, in Thailand) that sends all the patient’s information to the hospital from the ambulance before it arrives, so staff already know the patient’s condition. This has made processes more efficient and saved lives.

Datacom and mobile networks
The workshop given by Eduardo Comas Montaño, a Huawei Cloud Core Network engineer and UASD graduate, was titled: Network principles: Datacom and mobile networks, and trained participants in data networks, covering topics such as setting up a communications system, the main network topologies and the functions of the typical equipment that makes up a network (routers, switches), as well as how these relate to communications networks (5G, 4G, 3G, 2G) and the needs of local and international companies.
Support
With presentations like these, Huawei and the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) aim to spark students’ interest in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), a field of great global importance that promises to help strengthen the country’s technological capabilities.
Alongside Eduardo Comas Montaño and Engelbert Reyes Cabrera was Enqi Cao, Huawei’s public relations representative, who coordinated the activity together with one of the university’s promoters, lecturer Wilson Suarez.

About Huawei
