More than 200 women benefit from the Women Entrepreneurs programme

• More than 200 women have benefited from Habitat for Humanity’s Women Entrepreneurs programme.
• The programme, created in 2018, aims to provide microcredit to women and make their homes productive.

Santo Domingo (March 2022). Thanks to the efforts of Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic, more than 200 women entrepreneurs have been able to develop their business ideas from home, through the Building Hope Step by Step project and its Women Entrepreneurs programme.

The Women Entrepreneurs programme is an initiative running since 2018 that provides microcredit to women heads of household or single mothers living in vulnerable conditions, to improve the infrastructure of their homes, so that they become productive homes that help generate the income needed to support their children and help them get ahead.

During these years of pandemic, the economic crisis has deepened. In response, Habitat sees the need for women heads of household not only to live in a safe home, but also to be able to earn a living for themselves and their children from home. The organisation wants every woman entrepreneur to feel supported and able to develop her business idea safely while cutting the costs of renting premises.

“When I fix up this business I’ll feel secure, because nobody will break in to steal and I won’t lose what I’ve invested,” says Irene, one of the women in the programme. “Having extra space will give me the chance to stock more and get more customers.”

The programme also provides family finance advice so they learn to manage the money their business brings in.

“Dominican women have our support. We believe every woman deserves to live in a decent home and have the livelihood her family needs for greater overall wellbeing, and at Habitat for Humanity we are making that possible,” said Cesarina Fabián, national director of Hábitat Dominicana.

The initiative ensures greater stability for women and their families, especially at a time when the home has become our first line of defence and an engine of economic recovery.

Hábitat Dominicana works to build or improve homes for Dominican women who lack the financial resources to secure a decent, healthy home during the current pandemic.
