CEMDOE officially opens its hospital stage alongside sector authorities

- With Vice President Raquel Peña in attendance, the Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Specialties (CEMDOE) officially opened its hospital stage.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. With the attendance of Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic, Raquel Peña Rodríguez, the Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Specialties (CEMDOE) held the official ceremony opening its hospital stage, formally marking the start of a new institutional phase before authorities, strategic partners and representatives of the health sector.
In her remarks, Vice President Raquel Peña highlighted the impact initiatives like this have on the Dominican population, stressing the importance of having institutions that widen access to reliable, safe and timely health services, in line with the country’s current needs.
Armando Pérez, president of the Board of Directors, stressed that CEMDOE Hospitalario is the continuation of a vision built from the beginning, honouring the dream of its founder, Doña Mariela Vicini, of transforming health care from a deeply human, people-centred perspective.
In the same vein, Dr Gastón Gabin, general director of CEMDOE, said that this hospital stage represents the realisation of the institution’s founding vision, translated today into better processes and an operation geared to clinical excellence. In his speech he noted that, over the course of its history, CEMDOE has treated more than 165,000 patients and provided more than 1.3 million health services, a reflection of the institution’s sustained impact on specialist care in the country.
He also highlighted as a milestone its Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, which validates compliance with the highest global standards of health care, and reported that the institution is preparing for its hospital accreditation, expected by the end of this year, as part of its commitment to continuous improvement, patient safety and quality of care.
He explained that the hospital starts operating with 21 beds, with planned expansion to 43 beds by July this year, and brings together 24/7 emergency care, high-complexity operating theatres, an Intensive Care Unit, a catheterisation laboratory and expanded diagnostic services, as part of structured, sustainable growth that supports the institution’s long-term mission.
The ceremony closed with a tour of the new hospital areas, allowing guests to see at first hand the scope of this transformation and its contribution to strengthening health care in the Dominican Republic.
With this official opening, CEMDOE reaffirms its commitment to safe, humane, quality care backed by international standards, consolidating a model of responsible growth that accompanies patients and their families at every stage of their lives.
