Cleveland Clinic named No. 2 hospital in the world by Newsweek

• Newsweek has ranked Cleveland Clinic the number 2 hospital in the world as part of its World’s Best Hospitals 2020 analysis.

In the United States, Cleveland Clinic again ranked number 2, while four other Cleveland Clinic hospitals were also among the country’s best hospitals: Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Florida-Weston, Cleveland Clinic Akron General and Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital.

In Ohio, Newsweek ranked Cleveland Clinic No. 1 and Fairview Hospital No. 3. In Florida, Cleveland Clinic Florida-Weston was No. 2.

In its list of the world’s top 10 hospitals, Newsweek said of Cleveland Clinic’s No. 2 ranking:

“Cleveland Clinic has always made patient care its centrepiece, and it takes its motto seriously: Care for the patient as you would a member of your own family.” Historically, Cleveland has also been known for its medical breakthroughs and organ transplants, including the first face transplant in the United States.

In 2019, it broke its own organ transplant records (897, up 3 per cent on the previous year), including the world’s first single-port robotic kidney transplant, which allows a small incision and limits the need for post-operative opioids for pain relief.”

According to Newsweek, its rankings are based on three broad categories:

Recommendations from more than 70,000 medical experts (doctors, hospital managers and healthcare professionals) invited to take part in an online survey.

Key hospital performance indicators, including mortality rates, patient safety, readmission rates, staffing levels, efficient use of medical imaging, and effectiveness and timeliness of care.

Patient satisfaction data, including overall satisfaction with a hospital, recommendation of a hospital, satisfaction with medical care, and satisfaction with service and organisation.

Newsweek’s ranking includes 21 countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Israel, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, India, Thailand, Australia and Brazil.

In addition to the Newsweek ranking, Cleveland Clinic has been highly ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for almost three decades. The 2019-2020 U.S. News ranking marked the 25th consecutive year Cleveland Clinic ranked first in heart care, and the 21st consecutive year Cleveland Clinic was ranked among the country’s top 5 hospitals.
