HOMS highlights prevention and the impact of the environment on kidney health

- This year, the international day places special emphasis on the relationship between the environment and kidney health.
Santiago. – To mark World Kidney Day, the Renal Center at Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) highlighted the importance of preventing and detecting kidney disease early, a condition that affects millions of people worldwide and, in many cases, progresses silently, at an event with patients and families in its central atrium.
In this regard, the director of the Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplant Unit at the HOMS Renal Center, Dr. Eliana Diná, highlighted that environmental factors such as pollution, water quality, exposure to chemicals and other elements of our surroundings can influence the development or worsening of kidney disease, making it essential to raise awareness of the impact of the environment on health.
In response, the HOMS Renal Center is driving initiatives focused on kidney health care, through medical assessments, specialised diagnostic studies and clinical follow-up that make it possible to identify possible changes in kidney function in good time.
“At the HOMS Renal Center we are committed to the prevention, detection and early care of kidney disease in order to reduce the flood of patients with end-stage disease,” said Dr. Diná.
The HOMS Renal Center has a specialised medical team of nephrologists, cardiologists, internists, nutritionists and endocrinologists, among other specialties. Its facilities include 52 haemodialysis stations, a manual and automated peritoneal dialysis unit, continuous renal replacement therapies, dialysis therapies in critical care areas, suites and emergency departments, kidney transplant preparation and follow-up clinics, renal clinical nutrition clinics, psychology and social work, an in-house pharmacy for high-cost medicines and a histocompatibility laboratory.
It also offers acute and chronic renal replacement therapy such as dialysis, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous therapies and transplantation; living-donor and deceased-donor kidney transplants; native and graft kidney biopsies; multidisciplinary presentation and discussion of complex cases; academic teaching for residents and nurses; inpatient ward care; follow-up in general, coronary and post-surgical ICUs; and preoperative assessments.
