HOMS successfully performs cochlear implant surgery on a four-year-old girl

• The Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) has successfully performed a cochlear implant on a four-year-old girl, surgery that will allow her to recover her hearing.

Santiago. – The Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS) continues to transform people’s lives, successfully performing cochlear implant surgery on a girl aged 4 years and 11 months, in a procedure led by Dr Raquel Guzmán Liriano, an ENT specialist in paediatric otolaryngology with a master’s degree in otolaryngology from this hospital.

“The cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that restores hearing in people with severe deafness, especially those who do not benefit from conventional hearing aids. This innovative device converts sound waves into electrical signals that directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the brain to interpret sounds. Its impact is profound, especially in childhood, because it supports the development of language, learning and social integration,” explained Dr Guzmán Liriano.

HOMS, with its mission of creating new departments covering every medical speciality, presents this surgery and commits to developing it to the full.

HOMS also noted that this surgery marks a before and after in hearing care for its patients, because it opens a new stage in the treatment of profound deafness in children: the procedure not only restores hearing, it transforms the life of the patient and of their whole family.

The surgery was carried out with the support of the Fundación Solidaria del Divino Niño Jesús, the HOMS Foundation and Volunteers, the Jesús con los Niños volunteer group and the San Andrés Parish in the La Otra Banda district.

This surgical achievement marks an important step not only in the history of HOMS, but also in access to paediatric medicine and hearing health in the Dominican Republic.

Since 2009, Dr Guzmán has led the neonatal hearing screening programme at HOMS, making it the first health centre in the country to implement this systematic assessment for newborns. She also works actively with the HOMS Foundation for human solidarity.
