Hospital IMG becomes the first tertiary-level centre in the DR certified by a US accreditation body

• Hospital IMG has become a health benchmark and a medical tourism success, having received patients from more than 40 countries.

Santo Domingo, 12 December 2022.– The Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC), one of the leading accreditation organisations in the United States, has granted its first international certification to a tertiary-level health centre in the Dominican Republic.

This important milestone reached by Hospital IMG, located in Bávaro – Punta Cana, makes the medical centre a pioneer and model of quality, strengthening Dominican medicine and marking an important step in promoting medical tourism.

By granting accreditation, ACHC certifies that Hospital IMG meets demanding US standards of medical quality and safety in regulatory and operational matters, ranging from evidence-based clinical protocols, maintenance processes, medical equipment upgrades, medical records, infrastructure and excellence in operating theatres and procedures, to the confidentiality of personal data and information.

“Obtaining this US recognition for the first time in our country demonstrates the quality of our standards and the efficiency of the medical care we have provided during our first five years. With this accreditation we reaffirm our commitment to pursuing excellence and care centred on patient service and safety,” said engineer Carlos Prato, president and founder of Hospital IMG.

The US ACHC Committee carried out a rigorous review of the health centre’s operations and quality standards and will provide ongoing support to ensure continued operational excellence and continuous improvement. “By meeting ACHC Accreditation Standards, Hospital IMG uses US best practices in all areas, including administration, medicine and nursing, with a focus on creating a culture of quality and innovation,” highlighted Hospital IMG general director Dr. Miguel Russo.

Meanwhile, the coordinator of IMG’s Quality Committee, engineer José González, said that to help position the country as a safe and competitive health destination, they are committed to complying with local regulations and international standards. This has made them a benchmark in health and medical tourism across the east of the country, supported by a multidisciplinary Quality Committee that ensures optimal, efficient and timely medical care.

He also highlighted Hospital IMG’s achievements: the first Dominican hospital licensed for Telemedicine, and a pioneer with an MRI unit and in laparoscopic surgery in Bávaro.

They also performed the first interventional cardiovascular surgery and fitted the first pacemaker in the east of the country, have a bilingual international department, hold agreements with more than 80 international health insurers and have received patients from more than 40 countries.

The process of obtaining the US accreditation took two years of multidisciplinary effort by every department at the health centre.
