IntraCare Center swears in Dr. Mario Furcal as its medical director

Santo Domingo. IntraCare Center swore in Dr. Mario Furcal as medical director. He is a renowned general surgical oncologist and breast specialist, known for his commitment to the health and wellbeing of his patients.

Dr. Furcal was sworn in at a gathering of health professionals who praised his appointment in light of his career.

“I am grateful for the trust placed in me. We will work as a team focused solely and exclusively on patient care. We will make every effort necessary to establish IntraCare Center as the strongest organisation in the country,” he said.

For her part, the health centre’s general director, Dr. Mélida Ortiz, highlighted IntraCare Center’s commitment to human-centred care.

“We are a health company that cares for people with a very special diagnosis. Ever since I arrived at IntraCare Center, I realised we are more than a chemotherapy centre; a whole range of qualities come together here. This centre is a concept designed with the patient’s dignity in mind, so that people feel at home,” said Dr. Ortiz.

Profile of Dr. Mario Furcal

He is a renowned general surgical oncologist and breast specialist, known for his commitment to the health and wellbeing of his patients. Born on 10 April 1970 in Banica, Dominican Republic, he has devoted his professional life to the fight against cancer, becoming a key figure in oncology in the country.

With a solid academic background, Dr. Furcal graduated in medicine from the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago and completed his specialisation in general surgery and surgical oncology at prestigious institutions. He has also broadened his training with several master’s degrees, including one in Health and Social Security Management and another in Forensic Medical Expertise.

His professional experience is extensive, having held leadership positions at major health centres such as the Instituto Nacional del Cáncer Rosa Emilia Sánchez Pérez de Tavares (INCART), where he is founder and manager of the Department of Surgical Oncology. He has also taught at several universities, helping to train new generations of doctors through his teaching of clinical oncology and surgery.

Dr. Furcal has also been actively involved in research and the community, coordinating cancer studies and running awareness and medical care campaigns for vulnerable populations. His work has been recognised with many awards and distinctions, most notably his selection by the international organisation IOCIM as the most outstanding surgical oncologist in Central and South America in 2023.

With a comprehensive, humanistic approach, the doctor continues to work tirelessly to improve the quality of cancer care in the Dominican Republic, becoming a benchmark in the field and a champion of his patients’ wellbeing.
