Samsung expands partnership with 20th Century Fox, a shared video vision

  • Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today presented a shared vision with the 20th Century Fox to further elevate the visual experience of users and the television industry in general.

A new video released by the company highlights its long association with the leading studio in the film industry and the importance of television in today’s largest content ecosystem; executives of both brands, Samsung and Fox, share their collective vision for the future.

“Fox and Samsung have been working collaboratively for many years on new technologies,” said Danny Kaye, executive vice president of Global Research and Technology Strategy for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “Over the years, we have built deep mutual respect, and now we take this collaboration to a whole new level.”

The partnership between Samsung and Fox began in 2013 when Samsung joined the Secure Content Storage Association (SCSA), a consortium of companies in the world of entertainment and storage that they aim to provide users with new ways to access high-quality digital programming through devices – and it did so with Fox’s support.

Samsung has already launched a UHD download service with Fox content, as well as an expanded service that includes High Dynamic Range (HDR) titles, which is available to users worldwide.

“Our goal is to offer the best consumer experience, preserving the filmmaker’s intention, without distortions or compromises,” said Won Jin Lee, executive vice president of Business Equipment and Visual Presentation Service at Samsung Electronics. “We are responding to the industry, the market, and the demand of the users with this continuous association.”

In 2014, Samsung launched its first “Video Pack” brand, which provides users with five titles licensed by the studio. That same year, Samsung and Fox established the Fox Innovation Laboratory, with Samsung’s first content integration project accessible in Samsung Ultra High Definition (UHD) televisions.

“We share a common goal, to provide the best user experience at home,” said Won Jin Lee. “Our skills have helped us continuously raise the bar for ourselves, as well as those of the industry.”

In 2015, Samsung and Fox, among other industry leaders, co-announced the UHD Alliance – where companies joined together to give way to the next generation of entertainment, by setting standards to support innovation in video technologies. The Alliance consists of promoting this commitment in 2016 and beyond.
